Col Burgess has served over twenty years as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army. He currently commands the 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He previously commanded 1-325 Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. From 2011-2014 he served in the Pentagon on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) as an Africa Counter-terrorism Operations Officer and the Executive Assistant to the Deputy Director for Special Operations and Counterterrorism (DDSO/CT), J37. He was awarded the Joint Staff Action Officer of the Year by the CJCS in 2013.
Throughout his career, he has served in multiple leadership and staff positions, including three tours in the 75th Ranger Regiment and two tours in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was recently selected to Command the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy following the Army War College.
Ken has deployed four times to Iraq, and five times to Afghanistan. His awards include four Bronze Star Medals, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and three Meritorious Service Medals. His decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Pathfinder, and Air Assault Badge.
Ken Burgess is married to the former Amy Schroeder of Maryland Line, MD and has two children, Grey (10), and Ella (7). He is the son of Captain (USN ret) Kenneth and Evelyn Burgess and has a brother, LTC Andrew Burgess, an Army Special Forces officer.
Ken is a 1997 Distinguished Military Graduate from James Madison University, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. He holds a Master of Science Degree in Defense Analysis (Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict) from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.
